How did you turn a short story into a novel? To me, it seems like an impossible thing to do. To pick up a pen and write a short story is one thing--but to pick up a pen and turn a short story into a full-length piece of work? How did you do it? How do you find the bravery to do that?

chuckpalahniuk:

Consider that a short story typically shows one event.  You might be able to extrapolate the preceding and seceding events from the original story.  Or the story can eventually act as a flashback within a longer piece.  Or, check out the original story version of “Story of My Life” published in Esquire.  Then, read the novel and you’ll see how extra details were added to build the story into the novel.

I wish I had the courage not to fight and doubt everything… I wish, just once, I could say, ‘This. This is good enough’. Just because I choose it.

People are all over the world telling their one dramatic story and how their life has turned into getting over this one event. Now their lives are more about the past than their future.

It’s only in drugs or death we’ll see anything new, and death is just too controlling.

Leonardo’s Mona Lisa is just a thousand thousand smears of paint. Michelangelo’s David is just a million hits with a hammer. We’re all of us a million bits put together the right way.
